Conservantionists have revived a lost paradise in a Borneo rainforest. A decade ago, the territory around Samboja was a like a moonscape, its trees cut for timber and the land burnt. So Dr Willie Smits, a forestry expert, bought a 5,000 acre site and set about replanting it, using seeds from 1,300 species of tree, and a special micro-biological fertiliser. Today, he says, the forest is mature, with trees up to 35m high, more rainfall and lower temperatures. It's an "ecological miracle", he told the Observer, "a fairy tale come true."
